He will have to get away from Captain Richard Madden, the Irishman who has murdered his co-conspirator in espionage, and entire his project via turning in the location of a secret cache of British weapons to his boss in Germany, whom he refers to as The Chief. He exams the contents of his wallet – revealing a revolver with only one bullet – locates the cope with of the one particular person succesful of passing on his missive, and runs to catch a teach to the suburbs.

A person named Stephen Albert greets Yu Tsun, talking Chinese, and invitations him to look the "garden of forking paths." Tsun identifies himself as a descendent of the writer of that very garden. In other phrases, each time the characters come to some extent at which a couple of outcome is possible, each outcomes occur. This causes the narrative to branch out into more than one narrative universes, which then supply the eventualities for brand spanking new bifurcations.
Seeing Captain Madden method, Yu Tsun expresses his gratitude to Dr. Albert for resolving the mystery of Ts'ui Pen's garden, then shoots him in the back. Though Madden succeeds in arresting Yu Tsun, Tsun has succeeded in relaying his message – the secret guns stash is in the town of Albert. Tsun reads about the bombing of Albert by the Germans in the British papers, the similar papers through which The Chief was once ready to learn the document of the homicide of Dr. Albert by Yu Tsun.
